VISION
There’s a place for you at Hayward Wesleyan Church!
Our desire is to create a safe place to believe, to belong, and to become all that God created us to be!
Together, we are reaching out to lost people, helping them become fully devoted and fully developing followers of Christ, and deploying them into the world to make a difference.
In other words: Bring ‘em in, Build ‘em up, Send ‘em out!
With this in mind, we continually think about our “Big Rocks”. These are the most important priorities by which we measure everything we do.
1) Worship: You Were Planned for God’s Pleasure
2) Fellowship: You Were Formed for God’s Family
3) Discipleship: You Were Created to Become Like Christ
4) Ministry: You Were Shaped to Serve
5) Evangelism: You Were Made for a Mission
Two additional “Big Rocks” are Ministry to Children and Ministry to Teens. We realize that we must reach the rising generation if we are going to impact the world for Christ.
WESLEYAN HISTORY
The Wesleyan Church is an evangelical, Protestant, holiness denomination with a rich heritage based on the teachings of John Wesley.
John Wesley was a priest in the Church of England in the 1700’s and founder of the Methodist movement. Wesley added to the Armenian teachings on the assurance of salvation believers can enjoy through the inner “witness of the spirit”.
In 1784, the Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in America; however, in 1843 a group of pastors and churches left that denomination because of strong anti-slavery convictions and their preference for a more democratic form of church government. This group became The Wesleyan Methodist Church in America.
In 1968 The Wesleyan Church was created when The Wesleyan Methodist Church in American and the Pilgrim Holiness Church united in order to serve Christ more effectively together.
Early leaders of The Wesleyan church were involved in the first ordination of women in 1843. The denomination was also the first to adopt a formal statement of faith in “entire sanctification”, God’s work of making believers pure in heart, holy in character, and empowered with the Spirit of Jesus for witness and service.
Headquarters for The Wesleyan Church is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. There are more than 3,000 local churches in 30 countries. Five colleges and universities are supported by the Wesleyan denomination in the United States and Canada.

Hayward Wesleyan Church has a history dating back to a tent meeting in 1924. In 1925, the church organized with eleven charter members. Their first building was located on 5th St. & Minnesota Ave. in Hayward. After experiencing tremendous growth in the early 1990’s, the congregation built and moved into their current facility on the corner of Hwy 77 & Nyman Avenue in 1996.
DOCTRINAL STATEMENT
What We Believe:
- The authority of God's Word
- The Creator God as Heavenly Father, perfect, holy, all powerful.
- Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord God in human flesh, the object of our worship, the focus of our praise.
- The Holy Spirit as the third member of the Trinity, tirelessly at work, convicting, convincing and comforting.
- Salvation through faith in Christ which creates in us newness of life and is our guarantee of eternal life.
- The experience of the Spirit-filled life which occurs when the believer presents himself as a living sacrifice to God and is given in return the fullness of God's Spirit.
- The imminent return of the Lord Jesus to claim His people.
- The resurrection of the dead, some to everlasting communion with God; others to everlasting separation from God.
- The great commission to spread the good news in our homeland and around the world.
The body of Christ, both local and universal, as it exists to proclaim God's truth, to demonstrate love, and to bring glory to Christ.
