“So Much for Humbug” // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

It was an unusually hectic day, when the invitation arrived in the mail.

“Come join us for a multi-church progressive Christmas dinner! Sign up if you are interested!”

“Bah, humbug!” I muttered, “Christmas season is much too busy — and now they want us to traipse all over town eating dainties in different churches? Nobody is going to go for that!”

Thus, the rejected invitation letter fluttered into the trash bin next to my desk.

But, Janet, the organizer of this event, was persistent. She called our office, asking why we had not responded to the letter.

“Letter? What letter?” Linda, our office manager wondered. “I don’t remember seeing it — but your idea is splendid! I’ll promote it — and we’d be delighted to host the main course!”

And so, despite my feeble whining and protests, the Multi-Church Christmas Progressive Dinner proceeded as planned. Over 100 people — Lutherans, Catholics, Baptists, Congregationalists and Wesleyans attended. It was like a big family reunion — brothers and sisters united!

Even Mr. Scrooge (that’s me) showed up and had an inspiring evening.

After appetizers, we explored the lofts of First Congregational, Before dinner, we sang carols at Hayward Wesleyan, and dessert at Grace Lutheran was delightful.

“Just think,” I said to Cathy on the way home, “We almost missed this beautiful experience because I thought we were too busy.”

So much for Mr. Bah Humbug.
