Instruction Manual for Parents // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

Kids don’t come with instruction manuals — they just come with personality!

Actually, there IS one instruction manual which provides the general rule for everybody. When you follow it, you won’t go wrong. This instruction manual is called the Holy Bible.

Here are some thoughts from the Great Instruction Manual on raising kids.

1. “Be kind and compassionate to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as in Christ, God forgave you.” (Eph. 5:32)

In other words, be good to your kids and forgive them when they mess up. Sometimes, frustration leads to a callous on the heart. Don’t let that happen to you! A tender hearted spirit is the only honorable attitude towards your children.

2. “Get rid of bitterness, rage and anger…” (Eph. 5: 31)

Relationships are damaged through angry outbursts. Think before you speak. If anger boils up in your soul, look within before you spout. A wrong reaction is often worse than the original offense.

Whoever flies into a rage always makes a bad landing.

3. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Eph. 5:29)

You can use your words to build up or to tear down. Damaging words are unwholesome. Never underestimate the power of a word: to lift up or to discourage.

What do your children really need?

4. “. . .put off falsehood and speak truthfully. . .” (Eph. 5: 25)

The best way to help your children grow up to be people of strong character and integrity is to really live it yourself.

If your life doesn’t match your talk, you will repel your children away from you. Live it genuinely, and eventually, they will follow you.

5. “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and the instruction of the Lord.” (Eph. 6:4)

In being firm, do not fail to be affirming. In love, direct them to the higher paths.
