Don’t Wobble // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

If you stand, just stand.
If you sit, just sit.
But whatever you do — don’t wobble!

There are already too many wobblers in the world — and we shouldn’t add to the number.

When it comes to matters of truth and integrity, we need to have the courage to take a stand without wobbling!

Unfortunately, our society today encourages fence sitting. People who take a stand end up being the target of the snipers who want to silence any voices contrary to public opinion.

Now, I’m not saying you should cause a scene like Archie Bunker, but I am advocating a commitment to truth — regardless of the price.

When we suppress the truth to appease people, we end up being “mugwumps.” Our mug is on one side of the fence and our wump is on the other!

Nobody respects a mugwump. The heroes of history are those who possessed the courage to take a stand.

When Martin Luther was on trial, the magistrate ordered him to recant his views. Luther refused, declaring, “Here I stand, I can do no other!”

Polycarp was one of the early leaders of the Christian Church. The Roman authorities arrested the elderly minister, and he was forced to make a choice: renounce Christ and live, or be burned alive at the stake. “For 86 years Christ has been faithful to me,” the old saint responded, “How could I deny the one who saved me?”

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama. She was weary after a long day of work — but also weary of being a “second class citizen”. Although her action brought trouble to herself, it paved the way for civil rights for all people in our land, regardless of race.

Oh, how our world needs people like that today. We need people who take a stand — people who aren’t mugwumps — people who won’t wobble!

What are the forces in your life today that are pressuring you to compromise? How are you responding to them?

Remember the old adage: If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.
