Nuggets from a Journal

I count my journal as one of my very best friends. For over twenty years, now, I have collected my ponderings and musings in spiral bound notebooks. Whenever I find a great quote, I promptly rope it and corral it in my journal.

Browsing through the journal at the end of 2002, I thought I would share a few of the golden nuggets with you. (disclaimer: One man’s treasure is another person’s junk. If these little treasures don’t turn your crank, you can go dig up your own!)

1. Self discipline is measured by beginnings and finishings. Most great successes are waylaid because of not getting around to starting, or failing to finish the job.

2. Walking in the valley, the shadows appear, making the darker situations darker and more ominous than they really are.

3. When making a decision, ask: “Is this the right course of action, or merely the most convenient one?”

4. The original sin (disobedience) can be summed up in two words: disbelief and discontent.

5. “God loves you too much to waste your painful experiences” — John Ortberg

6. “If decency does not abide in the captain of the ship, then it is not on board.: Captain Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty

7. A newspaper article on the conflict in Israel was entitled “Coming Apart at the Seams.” The Hebrew word for ‘seam” literally means “the coming together place.” Often, we tear apart at the very places where we ought to be coming together.

8. Chicken Pox or Small Pox? When faced with a “problem”, the first thing to do is determine how serious it really is.

9. On Leanness of Soul: A person can die of mental and spiritual starvation.

10. On the Significance of Solitude: All great works in literature, art, leadership, and science were birthed in the solace of quietness.

11. A rut is a grave with both ends knocked out

12. On Truth: “The misfortune of the truth in all periods has been, not so much the loss of truth, but the corruption of truth; not the extinction of the sparks and embers, but the covering them with error and superstition.” Lowrey in Possibilities of Grace

13. “Holiness is faith working by love.” John Wesley

14. “It is a very sad and small purpose of life to collect green pieces of paper with dead presidents on them” Andy Stanley

15. Your heart is no place for junk to dwell. It’s a temple, not a garbage heap.

16. “Neurosis is always a substitute for legitimate suffering, but the substitute itself ultimately becomes more painful than the legitimate suffering it was designed to avoid — when we avoid the legitimate suffering that results from dealing with problems, we also avoid the growth that problems demand from us.” Carl Jung

17. “Believing, resting, abiding, obeying — these are my part. God does all the rest.” Hannah Whitehall Smith
