It Can’t Be Done! // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

“If men were intended to fly,” Bishop Milton Wright thundered from the pulpit, “God would have given them wings! Flying is reserved for the angels!”

Fortunately for us, his two sons, Wilbur and Orville, weren’t paying attention to the sermon that Sunday. Later, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, they ushered in the age of flight as the first airplane lifted off the ground.

Our world is filled with people who say, “It can’t be done!” These negative voices chime loudly together each time anybody attempts to do something out of the ordinary. Just a mere glance at history will show that any great accomplishment is accompanied by a crowd of critical doom and gloomers, explaining all of the reasons why this venture will not be successful.

How about these objections, for instance:

* “Don’t sail too far, Columbus. You’ll fall right off the edge of the world.”

* “A theme park centered around a rodent? Walt, be reasonable! Nobody would ever come to a place like that!”

* “Space stations are for science fiction, not reality. It can’t possibly happen!”

* “A personal computer is impractical. There’s absolutely no market for it!”

Did you know that the Theory of Aerodynamics “proves” that the bumble bee is unable to fly because of its size, weight, and body shape in relation to total wing speed? Thank goodness bumble bees do not know this!

Around 50 years ago, running a mile in under four minutes was considered impossible. That is, until Roger Bannister did it on May 6, 1954. Since, many men have done it — including one fellow over 40 years old! Women are also closing in on the on the four minute mile — and will break through the barrier before you know it!
