The Joy of Learning // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

Is your “learning switch” always on? You should never let a day go by without learning something.

Too often, people live on auto-pilot. Going through the daily routine, they let the television do all the thinking for them. Too much TV. can turn your brains into mush!

Life is one big glorious learning opportunity. Every day is a gold mine — you can glean all kinds of riches from every experience — if you have the right attitude.

The best way to expand your brain and broaden your horizons is to be a reader.

Want to be smart? Read good books.

While TV turns your brains to mush — excellent literature sharpens the mind and inspires the soul! Walt Disney said, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island!”

Although the crowd doesn’t realize it, the habit of regular reading is just as important as sleep, and exercise. The longer you go between books, the duller your mind becomes.

Want to be an interesting person? Read good books! The discipline of reading adds spice to conversation. Do you want to be a good communicator? You can start by being a good reader!

Want to live rather than just exist? Read good books! Somehow, great literature helps to interpret our life experiences. As Martin Luther surmised, “Every good book is action and every great action is a book.”

“Miss a meal if you have to, but don’t miss a good book.” — Jim Rohn

The more you learn, the more you know and the more you grow. An old slogan states, “Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.”

Just think — you can have personal conversations with the smartest, most inspiring people who have ever lived through their books! You can visit with Shakespeare, Emerson, Jefferson, and Emily Dickenson. You can learn from the heroes in every walk of life. You can travel around the world and even into other centuries. All you have to do is take a trip to the library.

Here’s an inspiring thought. On 15 minutes a day, one can read twenty books a year. That’s possible for just about everybody.

Motivational speaker, Brian Tracy, gives a secret to guaranteed success: “Read an hour a day in your chosen field.” There’s power in those pages!

Of course, it is important to read the right stuff! If you just read the best selling magazines (T.V. Guide and National Enquirer), it won’t do too much good. Look for the best possible sources of information and inspiration. The Holy Bible is the greatest book in the whole world. It has transformed the lives of countless millions — and can make a major difference in your life. Daily Bible reading has made a tremendous difference in my own life.

Look to the literary classics, poetry and biographies of great people. Search for books which will add value to your life and help you become a better person. Great books are everywhere! Start digging in!

An important point to ponder: All great leaders are great readers.
