Two Perspectives // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

A little lad and his weary dad
watched autumn leaves falling from trees
outside the picture window.

“Oh, great.” the dad sighed,
“I’ll have to rake those things.”

“Oh great!” the lad replied,
“I’ll help you!
And then, let’s jump in them!”

Whether it’s work or play is determined by our attitude and perspective.

One person can be “working” even in recreation. Last summer, I took my family camping, and caught myself fretting and griping as I fumbled through setting up camp. I had turned our “fun” excursion into a big, bothersome chore.

On the other hand, I remember one particular “let’s get the house really clean” day — when Cathy played Mary Poppins and encouraged us to turn our work into a game.

After the rest of us stopped protesting and starting pitching in with a good attitude — we had a lot of fun together. The house was spiffied up, and we laughed a lot in the process.

Duty or Delight? It really depends on how you look at it!
