Self-Serve // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

The other day as I was filling up my car with $3.00 gasoline, I noticed the sign above the station: “Self-Serve.”

A lot of people have the gas station mentality: “Self-Serve.”
They are consumed with an inward focus.

While celebrating their 25th anniversary, a husband asked his wife, “Honey, do you know why we’ve managed to stay together all these years?”

She sweetly replied, “I think it’s because we’re both in love with the same man!”

“What’s in it for me?” is a popular motto these days. “If I’m not getting back more than I’m putting in, then I quit!”

Individuals who subscribe to this attitude give up too easily. They walk away when they should stay.

Marriage crumbles when partners focus more on themselves than each other. The workplace deteriorates when the employees put themselves first. Good communities cannot be built on selfish people.

The “me first” mentality always leads to weakness.

We must remember that we’re all in this together — and no person is more important than another.

Christian Herter, the former governor of Massachusetts, stopped by a church bar-b-que while on the campaign trail. It was late in the afternoon, and Governor Herter was famished.

As he went through the line, the lady serving chicken put a piece on his plate.

“Excuse me,” the governor said, “do you mind if I have another piece of chicken?” “Sorry,” came the reply, “only one piece of chicken per person!”

“But I’m starved!” Governor Herter complained. “That doesn’t make any difference,” the chicken lady replied, “only one per customer!”

“Do you know who I am?” he protested, “I’m the governor of this state!”

“Do you know who I am?” the woman retorted, “I’m the lady in charge of the chicken. Move along, buster!”

So much for “Self-Serve!!”
