Count Your Blessings! // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

Johnson Oatman Jr. became a Methodist minister in the late 1800’s. His life of service proved to be quite challenging. Some would say he was not a very successful minister. In fact, the congregations he served were so small they could not pay a full time salary.

Struggling to make ends meet, Oatman was forced to look for a second job. He landed a position in the insurance industry. Somehow, despite juggling two and sometimes three full time jobs, and fulfilling his responsibilities at home, he squeezed in the time to write a few songs.

Johnson Oatman Jr. wasn’t much of a musician, really. His preaching wasn’t extraordinary, either. I doubt if he ever spoke to more than 50 people at one time. Yet, countless thousands have been blessed and inspired by the words he wrote. The pen, indeed, is a mighty tool.

We sang one of his songs in church last Sunday – “Count Your Blessings.”

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you his wealth untold.
Count your many blessings money cannot buy.
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your blessings see what God has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your many blessings see what God has done.

Your position in life is not nearly as important as your disposition. Counting your blessings rather than your problems brings happiness, peace, and fulfillment.
