Execution, Timing, and Touch // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

On July 29, 2000, Joe Montana was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This was no surprise to anybody. Montana has made his place as one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks in history. He played a major role in leading the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl championships in the 1980’s. He was the master of the “come-back” victory.

What made Joe Montana so great? It wasn’t his size. He was shorter than most quarterbacks. It wasn’t his strength. Many quarterbacks could throw further than Montana.

Joe Montana was great because of his brains, his strong desire, and his determination to win. He was great because of the way he thought.

His coach, Bill Walsh, said, “It takes execution, timing and touch to be a successful passer.” Joe Montana mastered all three, and created a dynasty.

It takes execution, timing and touch to be successful in most of life’s ventures. Execution, timing and touch are essential for good planning and decisions.

Execution means doing the right things. Timing means doing the right things at the right time. Touch means doing the right things at the right time in the right way.

The execution, timing and touch mentality says that having brains is more important than brawn, than working smarter is more effective than merely working harder, and that how you deal with things is just as important as the action you take.

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right – at the right time – in the right way. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7
