It Pays to Be Kind! // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

It pays to be kind!

On a dark, rainy night in Philadelphia, a distinguished looking couple came into a hotel and asked for a room.

The hotel was full, but the young desk clerk, seeing their plight, offered to help them out by letting them sleep in his own room for the night. “It’s not much,” he admitted, “but it’s clean and you will be out of the rain.” The couple was amazed at the kindness he showed them and accepted his offer with gratitude.

Nearly a year and a half later, a huge world-class hotel opened in New York City – The Waldorf Astoria. Who do you suppose was selected to be the manager? The desk clerk from Philadelphia! Why? Because it was Mr. and Mrs. John Jacob Astor who had stayed in his room on that stormy night many months before. They didn’t forget!

Kindness pays in many ways. It doesn’t guarantee great opportunities like the one mentioned above, but it does promise a wonderful sweetness in your life and relationships.

When you are kind to others, the kindness will come back to you. Happiness is like a boomerang. As you give it to others, it always comes back to you.

Unkindess hurts. Hardly anybody is unkind intentionally. It just happens when we don’t think – when we fail to consider the feelings of others. We are often so wrapped up with our own problems and needs that we are insensitive to those around us.

Be kind! Refuse to act without thinking. Make it the theme of all your relationships. When people see you, give them reason to be happy to know you.

The old song puts it this way, “Let me a little kinder. Let me be a little blinder to the faults of those around me. Let me praise a little more.”

When you are a negative porcupine, people will avoid you. They’ll run the other way. You don’t want that to happen.

Make it your goal to build others up rather than tearing them down.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
