Mothball People // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

A while back I read about “The Mothball Fleet”, 768 inactive naval ships. These vessels make up the third largest fleet in the world. In case of emergency, they can be ready in thirty to ninety days. In the meantime, however, they are in storage. All openings are blocked up and each ship has been repainted with a special preservative coating to keep it from rusting out. They sit and collect dust.

There are a lot of “Mothball people” in this world. You know the ones. They have tons of potential, but they just sit around and never accomplish anything. They only do what is required, and they bellyache at that!

Wouldn’t it be great if the “Mothball people” cleaned the cobwebs out of their brains and moved into active service?

Nothing is accomplished until you roll up your sleeves and get to work. Progress occurs at a price. There are no shortcuts to genuine success.

The world is made up of three kinds of people: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened.

If you expect to get anywhere in life, you need to be in the first group! Make things happen!

Don’t just sit there – move into action! As Will Rogers said, “Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.”

“But look at me,” you might say, “I’m a loser. Everything I touch seems to fall apart.” Well, do something anyway. The only real losers in life are the ones who fail to try.

John Wooden, the great basketball coach, stated, “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

One sales manager instructed every member of his team to do a small exercise each morning. He said, “As soon as you get up, I want you to repeat, ‘Do it now!’ fifty times.” Do it now. Do it now. Do it now.

By the time the salespeople had said their last “Do it now”, they were ready to do just that. Instead of merely talking about their work, they went out and did it!

What are you intending to accomplish?
What do you hope to do with the rest of your life?
What is the first step towards realizing your dream?

Do it now!
