The Millenium // Positively Speaking // Mark Wilson

I have some good news and some bad news about the new millennium.

The good news is that the year 2000 will bring tremendous opportunities for you. It’s hard to even imagine the wonderful things in store, as you journey into uncharted territory. The best is yet to come!

The bad news is that the new millennium will also bring tremendous obstacles. You’re going to face some heavy -duty difficulties.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to you, because every year brings the same thing – a combo of opportunities and obstacles – it’s a package deal! You can’t have one without the other.

The size of a person is measured by what it takes to defeat him/her. You cannot make it to the mountain- top without a good measure of courage and persistence. You mustn’t let the hardships keep you down.

You have five options when dealing with adversity:

1) Flee it – You can run away and hide. Many people quit when hard times come. We must remember, however, that winners never quit and quitters never win. If you run from your problems, you will never outgrow them.

2) Fake it – You can pretend like you don’t have a problem. “If I ignore this situation long enough, perhaps it will go away.” Unfortunately, most problems are like dead skunks. The stench doesn’t get any better by sweeping them under the carpet.

3) Fight against it – You can complain, yell, and whine all you want, but that won’t make things better. In fact, a negative, bitter attitude compounds the problem.

4) Forget it – You can resign yourself to discouragement, throwing your hands up in despair and sighing, “Oh well, that’s just the way it is.” However, you’ll never be able to fix it if you just “forget it”.

The best option is . . .

5) Face it – With boldness and confidence, stand up to that obstacle! Commit yourself to growing into a better person because of the difficult valley. There are creative solutions to every problem – find them! Don’t let the troubles of life get the best of you — Instead, turn around and get the best of them!
