NEW Curriculum for Main Street

We are moving to a new curriculum for our Main Street (grades 1-6) children’s ministry on Sunday morning called Gospel Story for Kids.

The Gospel Story for Kids is a unique, three-year program that helps churches and families ground children in the gospel story from Genesis to Revelation. Children who began this program [in grade 1] will have learned and absorbed the gospel story from Genesis to Revelation [two] complete times. At each age level children are taught the gospel through age-appropriate illustrations, activities, coloring pages, object lessons, and memorization using the Gospel Story Sunday school curriculum, an illustrated children’s storybook Bible, The Gospel Story Bible, and two family-friendly devotionals, Long Story Short: Ten-Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God (OT) and Old Story New: Ten-Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God.

For the past nine years we have done 3 cycles of 3 years worth of curriculum which covers the biblical story in chronological order. This was a home-brewed curriculum of ours and it has served us well these last nine years.

The reason we are making this change is for one main reason and one small reason.

First Reason

We believe really strongly that we need to make a shift in our youth and children’s ministries @ Hayward Wesleyan to equipping families to engage with their children spiritually amidst regular life at home. Not much will look different with this new curriculum on a Sunday morning, but the material they have for families is incredible. Not only will the students be immersed in the Bible stories in Main Street, but the could potentially be immersed at home as well.

The idea is to begin the conversation in Main Street on Sunday morning, and for the conversation to continue at home the rest of the week. The Gospel Story for Kids curriculum has a children’s storybook Bible and two family devotionals (one for the Old Testament and one for the New Testament). The devotionals have 5 days worth of content available, so a family could potentially have 5 days worth family devotions together in a week.

The Gospel Story Bible (children’s storybook Bible)

Long Story Short (OT devotional)

Old Story New (NT devotional)

I can’t emphasize this enough: We REALLY believe that a family taking the spiritual formation of their children seriously should be engaging with their children (and themselves) in the Word of God, prayer, and going to church together.

Second Small Reason

Sometimes when you do the same kind of thing over and over again, you just want to try a different approach. While this new curriculum will be VERY similar to what we have done the last nine years, it will be different enough to give us some new and fresh ideas to make our instruction of the stories of the Bible that much better.

  1. I am making Sunday School lessons in one of the tribal languages of the Philippines and would very much like to use your lessons as a resource of ideas. Is that acceptable to you? I will abide by any of your restrictions. Alternate e-mail bus_dawson@sil.org
