Isaac & Ishmael

Isaac & Ishmael;

013 Gospel Story for Kids | Main Street @ hwc

The Story

The long awaited promise of a son is fulfilled. Isaac is born to a man who is 100 years-old and a woman who was not only in her 90s, but who was barren her whole life. Only God could produce a miracle like that!

Abraham’s son, Ishmael, was Sarah’s attempt to produce children (trying to preempt the promise) through her servant, Hagar. Blended families often are hot beds for jealously and comparisons. When Ishmael laughed (mockingly) at Isaac during a feast Abraham had prepared for Isaac, Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away.

And he did. But God provided for Hagar and Ishmael.

Genesis 20-21

Teaching Points

  1. Abraham struggled in trusting God.
  2. God fulfilled his promise to Abraham.
  3. God saved Ishmael and Hagar.

The Gospel

We learn that God cares about nuclear families (Dad, Mom and children) just as much as he cares about blended (as a result of death or divorce) families (Mom, Dad, step Mom or step Dad, and children both half and step) and even single parent families (where only one parent is parenting the children at a time).

Christianity does’t promote one over the other, rather redemption and reconciliation. God cares about ALL families. And that is the Gospel!
