Who Wrote the Bible? // Main Street

01 In the Beginning

This past Sunday in Main Street, the students interacted with the question:

Who wrote the Bible?

Good question, right?

Well, some kids in the video gave some possible answers to that question. Here are some of their thoughts:

  • lots of people who love Jesus
  • only one
  • maybe two people
  • nobody
  • lots of writers
  • the disciples
  • Nehemiah and David
  • Moses
  • prophets and apostles
  • some people who listened to God and write down what he says

God’s word is inspired, which means that God didn’t write the Bible himself, but he “breathed into” (gave life) to human authors who wrote God’s messages in their own words (but sometimes in God’s words). In other words, the Bible is God’s truth communicated through people’s words.

Who wrote each book?

  • Moses wrote the Torah (first 5 books of the Bible)
  • We think Joshua or a scribe wrote Joshua
  • We’re not too sure on Judges or Ruth
  • Perhaps Samuel wrote Samuel, but maybe not because lots of events happen in 1 & 2 Samuel after Samuel dies. So it was probably someone else.
  • 1 & 2 Kings are a historical and theological account of the rise and decline of Israel’s monarchy after David so it is more a collection, albeit an intentional collection of royal accounts.
  • Ezra wrote 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah
  • David authored most of the Psalms
  • Solomon wrote Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs
  • Prophets were written by the names of each prophet book
  • The Gospels were written by those whose name it bears
  • Acts was written by Luke
  • Paul wrote most of the epistles in the NT from Romans thru Philemon
  • We’re not sure who wrote Hebrews.
  • The other epistles are written by those whose name is attached to them.
  • The disciple John wrote down what he saw in the Revelation

God inspired the process of writing the Bible.
